The quit smoking drug Chantix has been linked to depression and increased risks of suicide, but new U.S. government stop-smoking guidelines are still happy to endorse the drug, the Associated Press reported May 8.

The guidelines from the U.S. Public Health Service say that while Chantix has been linked to depression and suicide, the Pfizer product remains the most effective drug for helping people quit smoking.

But there's a problem: The guidelines are LINKED to the Drug industry, and worse yet to Pfizer! As it turns out - and it's no surprise to anyone who knows how these power structures work - the lead author has an important connection with Pfizer, the manufacturer of Chantix. Lead author of the guidelines, Michael Fiore, was a consultant to Pfizer as recently as 2005.

What's more the guidelines focus on drug use to quit smoking, while studies have shown that quitting cold turkey is the most effective way to stop. This approach to quitting, however, makes no money for the drug companies that have so generously sponsored the junk science and hysteria that supports the anti-smoking crusades.

OHIO SMOKERS - Take Cover! Get Private!

According to Ohio press reports, the Ohio Department of Taxation has mailed over 5,000 Surprise Cigarettes Tax Bills statewide. They hope to collect well over TWO MILLION DOLLARS from Ohio smokers who made Internet cigarette purchases between July 2007 and March 2008.

Cigarettes sold in Ohio are subject to both excise and sales taxes, officials said. The current state excise tax on a pack of cigarettes is $1.25.

A state tax department spokesman said the bills average about $600, and are due within 30 days. He also said, "In the last few years, state attorney generals are aggressively requesting the information."

The last time Ohio billed for unpaid cigarette taxes, in 2006, it collected $568,807 from 1,610 individuals for online purchases.

In WISCONSIN -

The state of Wisconsin has just sent out over 1,000 Surprise Tax Bills for cigarette taxes and penalties.

According to Associated Press reports, the state got the names from 75 Internet cigarettes vendors.

Officials are not saying much about how they got the names of customers because they don't jeopardize relationships with them. "We've gotten some very good two-way dialogue going with them, and we don't want to have them pull back and not give us those names," a state official said.

Wisconsin said it will bill smokers $1.77 per pack in taxes, with added sales tax, interest, and a $25-per-carton fine!
